Schedule
- Swim lessons are held Monday through Thursday during daytime hours
- Fridays may be available based on private lesson request.
- No evening lessons required
Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching swim lessons, water safety, and stroke development in a safe, structured, and positive environment.
This position is ideal for individuals with strong swimming ability and communication skills who enjoy working with children and families. Prior teaching experience is helpful but not required, as training and support may be provided for qualified candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide swim instruction for children, teens, and adults of varying skill levels
- Teach water safety, stroke development, and foundational swimming techniques
- Prepare and deliver age-appropriate, skill-based lessons tailored to participant ability
- Maintain a safe and positive learning environment at all times
- Maintain attendance records and lesson documentation as required
- Communicate regularly with parents and participants regarding progress
- Complete incident/accident reports when necessary
- Perform general housekeeping and upkeep of the aquatic facility as needed
- Assist aquatics staff to ensure smooth daily operations
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire
- Strong swimming ability (able to demonstrate basic swim strokes confidently)
- Comfortable working with children and maintaining a positive, patient attitude
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment
Preferred:
- Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification
Candidates without WSI certification may still be considered if they have prior swimming experience and demonstrate the ability to effectively teach basic swim skills.
Certifications
- Must possess or be able to obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certification within 1 month of employment.
- WSI certification preferred but not required at time of hire (training may be provided depending on candidate).
Lifeguarding Opportunities
- Lifeguarding certification is not required for this position.
- However, lifeguarding opportunities are available for instructors who are certified or interested in becoming certified.
- Cross-training may be offered for additional hours and responsibilities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to swim and demonstrate all basic strokes.
- Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods.
- Ability to work in hot, humid, and outdoor conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs when needed.
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
